Artist workshops, exhibitions, and even rooftop parties are just some of the activities hosted by the Swiss Institute, a contemporary art organization in New York City. Thousands of people visit the institute every year—free of charge. But with coronavirus ravaging the city, the institute is facing at least four months of closure and huge disruptions to its business. Director Simon Castets tells Tanya König why he thinks that private philanthropy will be impacted in the pandemic’s fallout and what the implications are for cultural funding.
